The Last Ten Minutes Belong to You
A small boundary for the final minutes before sleep.
By the end of the day, attention is tired. The feed is not.
There is always one more message, one more image, one more thing that appears important enough to delay stopping. Late-night scrolling rarely announces itself as a decision. It begins as a minute and quietly becomes the final atmosphere of the day.
The problem is not that every screen is harmful or every use is empty. The problem is that an endless surface has no natural place to stop. If the boundary is left to the moment when attention is already depleted, the surface usually decides for us.
If you want to stop scrolling at night, move the decision earlier: choose a ten-minute boundary and place the phone far enough away that using it requires standing up. No app is required.
Make the decision before the final minute
A boundary works better when it is prepared earlier.
Choose a point ten minutes before sleep. At that point, place the phone somewhere that cannot be reached without standing up. A shelf across the room is enough. Another room is optional.
Turn on the setting that allows only the people who may genuinely need you. Everything else can wait ten minutes.
Do not make this a test of discipline. Change the arrangement instead.
Leave one quiet object in its place
The empty interval does not need to become a new routine.
You may leave a book, a notebook, or a glass of water where the phone used to be. You may also leave nothing there. The purpose is not to replace one demand with another. It is to let the day end without requiring more input.
If a thought needs to be kept, write one line. If nothing arrives, allow nothing to happen.
Ten minutes is small enough to protect without turning it into a performance.
How to stop doomscrolling before bed tonight
Before the evening becomes late:
- Choose the ten-minute boundary.
- Decide where the phone will rest.
- Allow calls only from the people who may truly need you.
- Leave one quiet object—or nothing—in its place.
- Do not measure the interval while you are inside it.
The aim is not a perfect night. It is one part of the day that ends because you chose where it ended.
The last ten minutes belong to you.
