Field Note 001
Attention is your real estate.
Explore Close
Attention is often treated like energy: something to manage better, increase, or optimize.
But attention behaves more like real estate.
It has boundaries. It can be occupied. It can be neglected. It can be given away in small pieces until very little remains available for the life that actually matters.
Every notification, unfinished obligation, open tab, ambient screen, and false urgency asks for access. None of them appears large enough to threaten freedom on its own. Together, they can occupy an entire day.
The first act of relief is not learning how to hold more. It is deciding what no longer receives access.
This does not require disappearing from the world. Quiet is not avoidance. A protected life can still be generous, capable, connected, and ambitious. The difference is that access becomes deliberate rather than automatic.
A five-minute occupancy check
Choose one part of your day: the first hour, the workday, the drive home, or the hour before sleep. Write down what regularly occupies your attention during that time. Do not judge the list. Just make it visible.
Then mark each item with one of three words: Worthy, Necessary, or Noise.
Choose one item marked Noise and remove its access for one day. Turn off the notification. Close the tab. Move the device. Decline the request. Leave the surface empty.
Do not immediately replace it. Notice what returns when the space is left open.
The measure is not whether the day becomes perfectly calm. The measure is whether more of your attention becomes yours again.
Relief from noise begins with a boundary.
